National Park “Plitvice Lakes” is one of the most beautiful sights in Europe. This “pearl of continental Croatia” because of its diversity was included on the list of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in 1979. Plitvice Lakes National Park, covers an area of 266 km2 and consists of 16 lakes connected by waterfalls and cascades. Lakes are divided into Upper lakes – larger and quieter, surrounded by dense forest and Lower lakes – located below 70 meters high cliff and surrounded by vegetation.
Plitvice Lakes were declared a national park in 1949. Today, they are the most visited tourist destination in Croatia and the number of guests who visit them surpasses even Dubrovnik.
Plitvice Lakes are famous for shooting of the films about the legendary chief Winnetou. One of the films carries a title “The treasure of Silver Lake” (Der Schatz im Silbersee) with the cast being Lex Barker, Herbert Lom and Pierre Brice.
