Split is a city whose history includes more than 1700 years. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful Croatian cities. Split is the second largest city in Croatia, the largest settlement on the east coast of the Adriatic. It has around 200, 000 inhabitants. It is the administrative centre of Dalmatia and of the Splitsko – dalmatinska county. Split is not only a beautiful place with a long and turbulent history but it is also an important centre of economy, administration, education and tourism.
It is a city that tells its own story with its historical monuments. The emperor Diocletian, who was known as one of the most intelligent rulers, but also as a fierce persecutor of Christians, reigned from Split. In 295, under his command, started the construction of the huge palace, a heritage, which to this very day is breathtaking. The palace, because of its grandeur and excellent condition, has been under the auspices of UNESCO since 1979.
